Russians were gearing up on Sunday (May 8) for the country's key national holiday - Victory Day - marked annually on May 9 to commemorate the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

This year's parade comes after Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine on February 24, which has ground on for nearly three months.

There has been no word from the Kremlin about what the Russian president might say at this year's parade, but Vladimir Putin is expected to send a "doomsday" warning to the West as Russia brandishes its military might for the world to see.
