Vladimir Putin has learnt from the grave mistake that Mikhail Gorbachev made when the Soviet leader, in 1990, never demanded of NATO that the Western military bloc put into writing that it would not expand eastwards, beyond Germany’s border. Instead, the incompetent Gorbachev was merely given an oral assurance by Washington. Thus, today, Putin is calling on NATO to pledge, in writing, that it will not admit Ukraine into the ranks of the Western military bloc.
