Matthew stalked the women as they made their way to their destinations. When the opportunity arose, he lifted them up and dragged them away. Once out of sight, he brutally raped and beat them, before strangling them. He was traced to both murders because of DNA left at the scene that was matched to DNA taken from a case where his victim survived.
