Although we've harvested tilapia intermittently throughout the year, this is our first large-scale tilapia harvest. I wanted to share this experience with our viewers.

Aquaponics is it's a near closed system, getting many benefits while allowing mother nature to do most of the work. However, you can make it a closed system by growing your own fish food. At that point, you have a sustainable food source, meaning all your food is free. Repair and maintainance cost is dirt cheap, basically the water or air pump.
No dirt, no weeds, the plants water themselves.
People are worried about fertilizer, not if you have an Aquaponic system, it's a self fertilizing system. You don't want to add fertilizer.
the fish fertilize the water (well, that is not exactly true, their are two types of bacteria that converts fish leavings(ammonia) into nitrite and then nitrate). This is a necessary step to be successful; Understanding the nitrogen cycle.
Once your setup, the little amount of effort, the little amount of cost, and if you grow your own fish food, you will be enjoying your clean harvest, saving all your money. Use food safe construction and equipment. Anything that goes into the system will get into the body. So you can have complete control over everything that becomes your food.
