The Gibeonites were to be eliminated buy, they come to Israel and, in a ruse dupe them into making a treaty. They were allowed to live. Why were Joshua and Israel deceived? They "did not ask counsel from the Lord." I know in my life that nothing good comes from failing to seek the Lord's guidance. Sounds as though there is a lot for me to learn here!
