Hampton was attempting to rob Mitchell Hines (black), the owner of Hines Detail Shop, at gunpoint, when Harvel came to his aid with a gun of his own. Mitchell was shot in the leg and survived, but Harvel was killed, before Hampton fled in a car driven by Williams.
