A new baby arrives in the world. The nurse looks, writes something in a chart, and checks a box: ‘Male’ or ‘Female.’ In much of today’s conversation, we’re told that this is ‘sex assigned at birth.’ It’s a phrase you’ll hear in schools, in the media, and in medical forms. But think about what that implies.
