A plague doctor treated victims of the bubonic plague pandemic. Typically, they were not experienced physicians or surgeons, and some were known to exploit the situation by charging patients additional fees for special treatments or false cures. The black plague resulted in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people in Eurasia, peaking in Europe from 1347 to 1351, and creating a number of religious, social and economic upheavals, with profound effects on the course of European history.
