RARE FOOTAGE OF RUSSIAN SPETSNAZ UNIT TRAPPED NEAR VILLAGE OF KOMSOMOLSKOYE IN CHECHNYA IN 2000
50 views
The video is filmed in March 2020, during the Battle for Komsomolskoye during the 2nd Russian Chechen campaign. This was one of the largest battles of the campaign. Approx. 1000 Chechen fighters retreating from Grozny that the Russians just captured, entered the village of Komsomolskoe and were blocked by the Russian forces. The Chechens took the stand and held the village for almost 3 weeks. Eventually, Russians captured the village and most Chechen fighters were killed, wounded, or captured.
In his short film, the Russian journalist Sladkov encounters a small detachment of Russian GRU special forces (or Spetsnaz). GRU is the Russian military Spetsnaz (GRU is roughly analogous to CIA; Russians also has FSB/KGB Spetsnaz (KGB=FBI+DHS), and Police Spetsnaz (kind of like SWAT)). Most soldiers wave at the cameraman, "Don't film me!" (which is what Spetsnaz are trained to do since their identities shouldn't be revealed). From the conversation, we gather that they've been here for the last 5 days and nights, mostly in ambushes, probably non-stop 5 days as their tired, dirty, sleepy faces tell us. They're full of adrenalin and, upon entering the safe zone, have a smoking break to calm the nerves. They talk about the Chechen rebels closing on them and following their footsteps.
In the scene with the black helmet, pissed-off guy. He is most likely the gunner (or could be the driver) of the BTR, armored personnel carrier. He says he pulled three wounded soldiers from the battlefield just now. He tried to save one seriously wounded comrade's life. "Was he still alive?" someones asked him. "Alive, but, fuck, I had no time to give him the painkiller!". We assume that the wounded soldier was then medivaced. Later on, he is frustrated that with all the artillery, multiple rocket launchers, and aircraft, they can't take this fucking village. This is the 2nd time he gets "stuck" (and ambushed) at this part of the village and keeps losing his comrades. He says that the entire village should be raised to the ground by the artillery instead of risking the lives of the infantry and Spetsnaz.
Throughout the video, they're asking the cameraman if they'll be shown on TV and then give shootouts to their moms and families.
- "What the fuck, our parents are already scared for us here, why the fuck are you filming us?!"
- "Mom, don't be afraid! I am quitting tomorrow, fuck this war" (jokingly)
- "Mama, I'll be home soon."
- "Mama, Hi! Soon I'll be home".
- "Mom, see you at home soon."
- "Hey, let me give a shoutout to my mom. I haven't seen her in 2 years. Mom, I'm alive and well. See, I am still alive."
