Vegetables need different amounts of NPK (Nitrogen - Phosphorus - Potassium) at different stages of growth. Early season fertilization is predominantly nitrogen to encourage stem and leaf productions. Once flowers come out, you can bump the phosphorus up to encourage robust fruiting body production.
