The Battle of Athens was an armed revolt that gained national attention in 1946. Attempting to end the control of an entrenched political machine, World War II veterans used force to ensure that on the day of the local elections every vote “was counted as cast.” Veterans armed themselves to retrieve the ballot boxes to prevent state officials from stealing the election. What followed was “the last certifiable armed engagement between citizens and their government on American soil.”
