So, The High Court has ruled that children under 16 who wish to undergo gender reassignment are unlikely to be able to give informed consent to be treated with puberty-blocking drugs.
Keira Bell and Mrs A won their case against the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, which runs the UK’s only NHS gender clinic for children, after it gave “experimental” puberty blockers to teenagers considering gender re-assignment. The High Court ruled on Tuesday that children under 16 were unlikely to be able to give informed consent when agreeing to take the drugs. Keira Bell started taking puberty blockers when she was 16, and Mrs A is the mother of a 15-year-old awaiting treatment.
If there was ever a more divisive subject amongst society today, then this one is definitely in the top 3.
