State atheism is the official policy of anti-clericalism in Marxist/Marxist-Leninist states which was the metaphysical worldview that Karl Marx (who was an atheist) incorporated into Marxism. Marxist governments systemically oppress and persecute religious people for no other reason than they are religious people who represent a metaphysical competition to the state atheist Marxist state (see Rodney Stark on "Religious Economy"). All Marxist governments suffer from Marx's incorporation of state atheism, including those who have incorporated aspects of religious freedom into their constitutions (which in practice they do not honor due to the inherent conflict present in all religion representing competing metaphysical worldviews to state atheism).
