Prof Laithwaaite was subjected to unjustified ridicule by the establishment for daring to challenge existing orthodoxy, which is in fact the proper business of science.  Perhaps this indicates that the degeneration of science to mere sophistry, which is no all but completed, started over fifty years ago.  It is probably why very little that is actually novel has been discovered in recent years, despite having the highest professor population in history.
