After a full afternoon on my feet handing out how-to-vote cards for the Australian Federation Party, I moved straight into the polling centre at closing time and began scrutineering for the same, with three others, they being for the Liberal Party, the Australian Labor Party, and the United Australia Party. It drove home to me how important it is that scrutineers be present at every count of votes, whether they be postal, pre-polled, or on the day. All in all, the process at Camboon Primary School polling centre was suitably rigorous, although not perfect, except that none of the scrutineers got to see the actual senate ballot counting; so just what was done, if there were any, with one to five numbers above the line, we don’t know. They would have been formal votes, but the staff may not have known this.
