Potato vine, Dioscorea bulbifera, has other common names: Air potato, Aerial Yam, Potato Yam, Bitter Yam. I am not certain that the vine I have is D. bulbifera, however, it surely is closely related. It has grown profusely and quickly among the tops of my Bambusa multiplex hedge, feeding from the Seamungus pellets I feed the bamboo with, and being a fleshy vine, has weighed it down. By cutting it off near the base, the vine will dry out over the winter months, allowing the bamboo to straighten up, probably with a lot of help from me. I am happy for it to repeat the growth next spring-summer, due to the bee fodder and extra shade it provides.
