Eastland and another man kicked open the door to an apartment and assaulted one victim at gunpoint, before stealing a shotgun and fleeing. Jason heard the commotion and went to see if he could help his neighbor. Eastland and the other man confronted Jason, who shut the door, which was kicked in. Jason was then shot in the shoulder trying to prevent them from entering, before the suspects fled. Jason was transported to the hospital, where he died two days later.
